Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose TaxAssist?

Having not worked in business as a business owner previously I felt the franchise route was a less risky pathway into business. I chose TaxAssist Accountants as I could stick to what I was qualified in and be close to home focusing on spending more time with my kids. Also, TaxAssist provides me with the support and training to round off my skills.


What did you do before taking up the franchise?

Before taking up franchising I was working as a Commercial Manager on mine sites in Australia and overseas.


How did you raise the finance?

Through my mining experience and good investment choices over the years.


How have you found the training and support?

The training and support have been excellent and a mix of theory and on the job training. Dealing with clients for the first time was a really different experience.

 

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

Usually after some exercise either swimming or gym I open up at 9am. I check what jobs are in progress and continue work on existing jobs, contact some leads, have a coffee with business contacts or existing clients. I spend time focusing on marketing and bringing in business clients plus look to improve business performance from existing clients and ensure their compliance with the ATO in terms of their reporting obligations. I then organise client accounts through online systems and keeping clients informed of how their business is going. Then there is all the filing, invoicing and administration, but I am training staff up to take over these responsibilities.

 

What challenges have you faced?

Working out what marketing works and does not work in my area. Keeping up to date with all the changes in Tax and Financial Planning so I have a general idea of financial planning and detailed knowledge of tax for business and individuals. Planning ahead without an existing client base has been a challenge, but now I am building a critical mass of clients regular work is coming in.


What have been the highlights of being a TaxAssist franchisee?

Working for myself and making my own choices of when I work and when I close. Meeting with all different businesses and different business owners, plus helping them to achieve the best outcome in terms of reporting and minimising their tax and helping them with investment decisions.


Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Yes it has brought me home to be closer with my children and given me more choices, plus ensured the benefits of success are mainly held by me.


What differentiates TaxAssist from the competition?

More of a focus on business, the client and getting the best outcome for the client.


What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying a franchise with TaxAssist?

Do your homework and make sure you invest in a good area. Use the team as much as you can and ask as many questions as you can think of. Get good advice from your advisers and make sure you are self motivated and driven to succeed.

 

What are your plans for the future?

To get the most out of my Nerang franchise, continue to hire good staff and look to expand the business with a focus on business clients.


How have you found your first year? Are you happy with your client and fee bank figures?

There are plenty of challenges in leaving the comfort of a high paying management job with all the benefits of working for somebody else, and you have to stay focused on where you want to get to. I am enjoying the challenge and the opportunity for uncapped income from my achievements and I’ve certainly enjoyed spending more time with my kids!

I am happy because after only three months I was able to take a wage and invest in the business with business cashflow, plus hired two staff to help with the production work. I am very happy with the clients who have found me and that I have gained over the year, and I am pleased with my fee bank although I am never satisfied and want to strive for more.
